Obituary

Alphia Jo McMahon of Alpharetta, GA. and Jasper, FL. passed away on June 12, 2019 at the age of 98.

Alphia Jo was born on September 18, 1920 in Jasper, FL. to the late Joseph W. and Alphia Buckels Mitchell. Her mother passed away very early in her life; therefore, she was raised by her father, grandmother Lou Anna Buckels and her stepmother Mabel Buckels Mitchell. Both families were early pioneer families of Hamilton County. She graduated from Jasper High School and went to nurses' training in Ocala. She served as a Navy nurse during World War II and had a long career in the nursing field. In 1947 she married John Francis McMahon, Jr., her husband of 65 years, who was a career Marine serving in World War II, Korea and Vietnam. Consequently, she was on her own raising a family during his many assignments overseas. After retiring from the service, they came back to Florida and in later years settled in Dowling Park, FL. until his death in October of 2012. A short time later she moved to assisted living in Alpharetta, GA. to be near her daughter Barbara.

Alphia Jo is survived by two children, her son Mike McMahon; her daughter Barbara Allen (Layne); one granddaughter, Virginia Clement; her two sisters, Abbie Wicker and Estelle Reistad (Knute). Besides her parents she was pre-deceased by Clinton Mitchell, her brother.

Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, June 28, 2019 in the chapel of Harry T. Reid Funeral Home.
