Obituary

James Barney Burnham, 88, of Jasper, passed away peacefully at his home late Thursday. He was born May 9, 1924 in Arcadia, Fla. to Dan and Lilly Burnham.
Barney, as he was known far and wide, lived most of his life in Jasper, where he served one term as mayor, and owned and operated Barney's Barber Shop for more than 35 years.

He served one tour in the U.S. Navy, and served in both the European and Pacific theaters during World War II. His stops included Southern France, Northern Africa, Sicily and Okinawa.
He was an absolute avid fisherman and for many years could be found on the waters surrounding Suwannee, on the Gulf of Mexico. He also loved the farm life, and took a great deal of pride in growing crops. He was extraordinarily generous with them, giving away most of what he grew and picked.
He made friends wherever he went and left a trail of smiles and laughter in his wake. His uncommon wit and good nature will be sorely missed.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Marjorie Blanton Burnham; a grandson, Jeffrey Scott Robertson; his parents; two sisters, Annie Maude and Eileene; and a brother, Arlie.

He is survived by a daughter, Sharon Roy of Milton Vermont, a son, Rick Burnham of Jasper, a grandson, James Stanton Robertson of Gainesville, a granddaughter, Brittney LeeAnna Burnham of College Station, Texas, and a nephew, James Strickland of Statenville.

Funeral services were held Monday at Harry T. Reid Funeral Home in Jasper with Rev. Wayne Sullivan officiating. Interment followed at Sasser's Landing Cemetery.
