Charlie Aubrey Mathis, Sr., age 79, of Jesup, GA., passed away Thursday, March 25, 2010 at Wayne County Memorial Hospital in Jesup. Charlie was born in Arabi, Georgia to the late Floyd and Nellie Mathis. He retired from the United States Army. Mr. Mathis worked for a time in the maintenance department for the Hamilton County School Board and also worked as a heavy equipment operator. Charlie was a member of Red Hill Baptist Church in Jesup. He was preceded in death by his parents; two children, Barbara and Charlie Mathis, Jr.; a great granddaughter, Lisa Marie Cason and a sister, Theaster Raines.

Survivors include his wife, Winifred Mathis, Jesup; three sons, Floyd Mathis, Gloucester, VA., Bobby Mathis, Adel, GA., and Johunn Mathis, Starke, FL.; a step-son, James Earl Fussell, Hazelhurst, GA.; one daughter, Elizabeth Novakovich, Indiana; two step daughters, Sheila White, Baxley, GA. and Barbara Floyd, Hazelhurst, GA.; one brother, Emmett Mathis, Jasper, FL.; two sisters, Waunell McCall and Lafayette McCall, both of Jasper; 10 grandchildren and 23 great grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Saturday, March 27 in the chapel of Harry T. Reid Funeral Home. Interment followed in Evergreen Cemetery.
