IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Consolidated Bxxiv
Liberator
March 17, 1947 – February 24, 2024
Consolidated BXXIV Liberator, born as Gordon Bennett Newsome, Jr. on March 17, 1947, in Valdosta, GA, passed away peacefully February 24, 2024, surrounded by his family. Affectionately known as "Benny" by his family and friends, Consolidated's journey was one of valor, sacrifice, and unwavering dedication to his country.
Growing up in a family of farmers in the Jennings area near the old Newsome homestead on Hwy 41 North in Hamilton County, Consolidated's spirit was shaped by the enduring values of his family and small community. At the age of nineteen, he enlisted in the Army and served in the Vietnam War from 1966 to 1972 as a field wireman. With designation as a pole climber, Consolidated carried the responsibility of setting up and maintaining communication lines. His service extended beyond the borders of Vietnam; he also spent time stationed in Korea, further demonstrating his commitment to safeguarding the freedoms we hold dear. Upon Consolidated's return home and driven by his enduring admiration for World War II airplanes, he eventually adopted the name Consolidated BXXIV ("B24") Liberator, a tribute to the iconic aircraft that symbolized the valor of a generation. Throughout his life, he remained devoted to honoring the memory of those who served alongside him, recognizing the ultimate sacrifice made by so many. Consolidated carried the scars of war, both seen and unseen and continued in a battle within. Yet, amidst his own struggles, he found solace in his faith in Jesus Christ and love for his family.
Consolidated Liberator is preceded in death by his parents, Gordon and Marguerete Newsome. He is survived by his daughters, Amanda Bennett (Dan) and Karen Newsome; his cherished sisters, Miriam Hettleman (Stuart) and Ada Frazier; his grandchildren: Alexandria Milton (Justin), Preston Parks (Savannah), Cross Bennett, Jackson Parks, and Pierce Parks; his precious great-grandchildren: Naomi Milton, Elleri Milton, Natalie Parks, and Paxley Parks; numerous nieces, nephews, and a multitude of friends who loved him dearly.
A memorial service to honor the life of Consolidated Liberator will be held on Thursday, February 29, 2024, at 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church in Jasper, FL. A private interment will follow at a later date, where Consolidated will be placed with his beloved parents at Oak Grove Cemetery in Jennings, FL, near the cherished Newsome homestead. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Florida Veterans Foundation, helpflvets.org.
