Donald “Don” Charles Reckner lived a remarkable 87 years, from May 14, 1939, to August 6, 2026, guided throughout his life by gratitude, prayerfulness, and a deep and abiding love for the Lord.
Don began his career as a Radiology Technician in the United States Army. Following his military service, he went on to serve as Chief Financial Officer for Advent Christian Village and Suwannee Valley Nursing Center in Florida.
Don’s profound love for the Lord was matched only by his unparalleled devotion to his wife, Avanell “Nell” Reckner, with whom he shared more than 50 wonderful years. Being Nell’s husband was Don’s ultimate role, and together they created an extraordinary life filled with faith, family, laughter, service, and love. Their greatest legacy was their generosity. They raised their children, spoiled their grandchildren and great-grandchildren, supported their churches, and helped those in need—often quietly and anonymously. Together, Don and Nell were a dynamic duo whose love and kindness left an impression on everyone who was fortunate enough to know them.
Don was a loving, patient, and kind father to Kenny Altman (Vicki), Marty Altman, and Jamie Altman Miller (Steve). He taught his children the value of selfless love, integrity, perseverance, and doing what is right. He cherished his grandchildren, Megan Altman, Lindsay Henry (Matt), and Gage Miller, and took great joy in his great-grandchildren, Corrine and James David Henry.
Don’s strong Christian faith shaped every part of his life. He faithfully served in various churches, held respected positions of leadership, and shared his beautiful baritone voice as a member of the choir. His faith was not simply something he professed; it was something he lived, reflected in the way he loved his family, served others, gave generously, and remained thankful in every circumstance.
Don enjoyed a life filled with simple pleasures and treasured moments. He loved traveling, cheering on FSU football, helping Nell with yard projects, and welcoming the many pets that became part of their family over the years. Above all, he enjoyed being with the people he loved.
During his final journey, Don continued to fill the hearts of his family with precious memories, loving words, and laughter. Even in his final days, his remarkable sense of humor brought joy to his family and to the Hospice nurses who cared for him. Don had a gift for making people smile, and that gift remained with him until the end.
On August 6, 2026, Don passed away peacefully, surrounded by the love of his devoted wife and children. He was predeceased by his father, sportswriter Harry Reckner, and his mother, Mary Williams.
Although our hearts are shattered by his absence, our faith comforts us with the promise that this is not goodbye. We hold tightly to the assurance that, through Christ, we will one day be together again.
A service celebrating Don’s life will be held on Saturday, August 22, 2026, at Wright’s Chapel Church, 190 Wrights Chapel Road, Lake Park, Georgia. Visitation is at 10:30 AM, and the service is at 11:00 AM.
