Dorothy Lee Kinsey Butler, age 92, of Jennings, FL. passed away peacefully Wednesday, May 6, 2015 at Suwannee Valley Nursing Center with members of her family by her side. Dorothy was born in Echols County, Georgia on October 31, 1922 to the late Jessie P. and Margaret "Maggie" Hancock Kinsey. She met and married John L. Butler, Sr. on October 12, 1941 and together they raised four children. She worked for many years as a bookkeeper for Dasher Gas Company in Valdosta and was a dedicated member at Jennings United Methodist Church. She was past-president of the United Methodist Women until her health prohibited her regular attendance and participation. Dorothy had quite a reputation for producing "the best" coconut cakes and chocolate pies ever. Stories are told of these favorites being hidden to keep others from getting the last piece of cake or pie at family and church functions. Laughter abounded in the Butler household where everyone thought they were a comedian but there was sadness as well. In May of 1986 the family buried Pace Randall Carter (son-in-law) and then in October of 1989 Mrs. Butler buried John, Sr., her husband of 48 years.
Survivors include one son, John L. Butler, Jr. and his fiancée Pat Coggins, Jennings, FL.; three daughters, Barbara DeVane, Tallahassee, FL., Brenda Carter, Jennings, FL. and Linda Goolsby and her husband Wade, also of Jennings; one sister, Vivian Lawley, Jacksonville, FL.; nine grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Friday, May 8, 2015 at Jennings United Methodist Church. Interment followed at Sassers Landing Cemetery near Jennings, FL.
Memorials may be made to Jennings United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 13, Jennings, FL. 32053.
