Edgel Harold Gilkison, of Jasper, FL. passed away on Thursday, December 1, 2022 at Haven Hospice Suwannee Valley Care Center in Lake City, FL. following an illness of some time. He was 94 years old.
Edgel was born in Yukon, West Virginia on February 5, 1928 to the late Robert and Blanche White Gilkerson. Yes, the spelling is correct and has long been the topic of conversation when revealing the differences in the spelling of the last name of father and son. Edgel grew up in coal mining country and vowed that he would leave that behind him when at the tender age of 19, he volunteered to join the United States Air Force. He would be leaving a wife behind but never off of his mind. Edgel made a career and saw a great deal of activity as an ammunition specialist with his last being in the Korean conflict. He retired and came home to take care of his wife and five children. He is fondly remembered by his daughters as a wonderful father and fierce protector. He and wife Anice moved to the Hamilton County area from Tampa where he earned a second retirement as a machine mechanic. Edgel was a man that loved his family and was a Godly man. He was a faithful member at Jasper Assembly of God as long as his health permitted. Edgel was preceded in death by his wife Anice Cline Gilkison and his daughter, Sandra Gilkison Call.
Survivors include three daughters, Shelia Gilkison Boussum (Jay) of Jasper, FL., Sharon Gilkison McNicholas (Michael) of Odessa, FL. and Judy Gilkison of Jasper, FL.; his son, Harold Michael Gilkison (Laura) of Avon Park, FL.; four grandsons, Raymond McIntosh, Jason Boussum, Stephen White and James McNicholas; four great granddaughters and two great grandsons.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday, December 7, 2022 in the chapel of Harry T. Reid Funeral Home in Jasper, FL. with interment beside his wife at Evergreen Cemetery in Jasper.
