Gordon Lamar Hill

Listen to Obituary

Gordon Lamar Hill, known simply as Pop to family, friends, and just about anyone who ever had the pleasure of sitting and talking with him, entered into God’s presence on July 16, 2026.

Born at home in Jennings, Florida, on October 25, 1941, to Biddleman Bascom Hill and Fleta Mae Horton Hill, Lamar grew up rooted in the land, the community, and the values that would shape the rest of his life. His homegoing leaves a deep and undeniable hole in the hearts of his family and in the Hamilton County community he served, loved, and supported his entire life.

Lamar was the kind of man people trusted. The kind you could sit with for hours—on a porch, in a barn, or leaning against a truck—listening to him spin stories from the past. He had a gift for storytelling, the kind that made you laugh, think, and feel like you were right there in the moment with him. He loved a good visit with anyone and everyone, and he had a way of making you feel seen, welcomed, and important.

He had a giving heart, steady and generous. If you needed something, Lamar would find a way to get it to you. If you stopped by, you weren’t leaving without tomatoes, vegetables, or whatever crop he had that week. He gave because giving was part of who he was—humble, helpful, and always ready to lend a hand.

Lamar operated the family farm for many years after his father, tending the land with devotion and pride. He also served several terms as a Hamilton County Commissioner, offering his time, his voice, and his steady judgment to the place he loved. His service was never about recognition; it was simply about doing right by his community.

He was a faithful member of Bethel Primitive Baptist Church in Jennings, FL, attending as long as his health allowed. His faith was quiet but strong, lived out in the way he treated others and carried himself through life.

Lamar was preceded in death by his loving wife of 41 years, Patricia “Pat” Kramer Hill, and his eldest daughter, Vicky Hill. He is survived by his children: Lisa (Hill) Cleghorn (Travis), Sharon (Hill) Hall (Patrick), and Gordon Lamar Hill, II, “Buddy” Hill (Vanessa); eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and his siblings, Lucille Bell (Jimmy), Bonnie Kay Donahue (Dany), and Madison “Shorty” Hill. He also leaves behind a host of extended family whom he loved deeply and who loved him just the same.

Lamar’s smile, his genuine heart, and his country charm will leave a lasting impact on everyone who knew him. He was the local go-to-man you called, the man you visited, the man you trusted. His legacy is stitched into the soil he worked, the stories he told, and the countless acts of kindness he offered without ever expecting anything in return.

Memorial services will be held on Sunday, July 19, 2026, at Bethel Primitive Baptist Church in Jennings, with Elder Ricky Deal officiating. Visitation will be from 10:00 A.M. to 11:00 A.M., followed by the funeral service at 11:00 A.M.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Bethel Primitive Baptist Church.
