Obituary

Irene Tuten Morgan, age 84, of White Springs, FL. passed away on Saturday, April 23, 2022 at Suwannee Valley Nursing Center in Jasper, FL. following an extended illness.

Irene was a native and lifelong resident of Hamilton County. She was born on June 18, 1937 to the late Mallory Horne Tuten and Maybelle Tuggle Tuten. She grew up working at the grocery store her parents owned. She met and married the late Hilward Morgan and moved to White Springs where the two made their home until Hilward's death in January of 2005. Irene was a helpmate to Hilward on the farm but she also worked over 20 years for the Hamilton County School Board as school secretary at South Hamilton Elementary. Irene knew practically everyone in the entire county between growing up in Jasper, working at South Hamilton, her membership and attendance at the First Presbyterian Church in Jasper and their longtime affiliation with Hamilton County Farm Bureau. With the influx of new residents in the county, if Irene didn't know who someone was, she certainly had no problem finding out. One could say, Irene was "connected." Her fellow partners in crime were sister-in-law's, Mildred and Linda along with cousin Phyllis. If the inside of a car could talk, oh the stories that would be told. Their travels most often took them to a department store shopping and never home without going out to eat somewhere. Irene was tiny and her son would add that she could be a force to be reckoned with but most anyone that knew her, knew her to be a fun-outgoing person. She and Hilward loved to dance and were very good at it together. They often hosted get togethers at the Morgan barn where there was live music by cousins, square dancing and clogging. Her lengthy illness has kept her fairly isolated over the last few years but her death will nonetheless be a great loss to our community. Irene was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and her sister, Mallora Tuten Wigelsworth.

Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Kevin M. Morgan and his wife Cindy of White Springs; two granddaughters, Mallory Morgan and Rachel Morgan Garland (Justin); and one great granddaughter, Morgan Raye Garland.

The family would like to say thank you to Irene's caregivers who helped care for her while at home, especially her full time caregiver, Verda Mathis.
