IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Irma Jacqueline
"Jackie" Mathis
June 20, 1941 – September 16, 2019
Irma Jacqueline "Jackie" Mathis, age 78, of Jennings, FL. passed away unexpectedly on Monday, September 16, 2019 at her home.
Funeral services were held Thursday, September 19, 2019 at New Hope Baptist Church. Interment followed in the church cemetery.
Jackie was born in Live Oak, Florida on June 20, 1941 to the late Olllis and Jewel Walden McCullers. She grew up in Live Oak and attended grade school and most of her high school years in Suwannee County until she ran across this slick talking boy Joe Corbett Mathis from Hamilton County. They married in August of 1958 and he took her across the county line to Jennings, FL. where she finished high school. That young man was blessed to call her his wife for the next 61 years. Jackie went on to college and received her Bachelor's Degree in Education and taught in the public-school arena in the Suwannee County school system and then had a lengthy career in Hamilton County at Hamilton County Elementary and Middle Schools and North Hamilton Elementary. Jackie was just a joy to be around. She always had some encouraging word, that beautiful smile and the unique ability to make you laugh whenever she was around. She did so enjoy poking fun at Joe whenever she could and she would often laugh and comment that he made it so easy. Jackie loved to sit on the bank and fish be it at the river or the coast. That meant dipping the pole in the water, not even necessarily catching fish but of course that was always a bonus. She could easily be dubbed one of the best cook's in Hamilton County and she enjoyed doing it. She loved to cook for family gatherings and hosted them often. She loved her family and looked for every opportunity to get them all together. Jackie was a faithful member of Burnham Christian Church. She was preceded in death by her parents, Ollis and Jewel McCullers, a sister, Genevieve Turman and a brother, Donald McCullers.
Survivors include her husband, Joe Corbett Mathis; her son and daughter-in-law Jorrie and Nancy Bass Mathis of Jennings, FL.; her daughter and son-in-law, Menieca and Allen Kennedy of Jasper, FL.; her sister, Barbara Peaden of Live Oak, FL.; six grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Numerous nieces and nephews that will dearly miss their Aunt Jackie.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Burnham Christian Church Building Fund, 4520 NW CR 146, Jennings, FL. 32053.
