James E. Nunn, Sr. USN, (Ret.), longtime resident of Jennings, FL. passed away on Friday evening May 26, 2023, at The Orchard at Stone Creek Retirement Home in Hahira, GA. at the age of 98.
James was born in Jennings, FL. on October 24, 1924, to the late Glenn and Mattie Clanton Nunn. He married Ms. Rachel Madeline Deas in 1944 and the two were husband and wife for the next 71 years until her death in November of 2015. His career began when he joined the United States Navy as a young man. He worked hard and advanced in the ranks of the Navy and was able to travel the world throughout the many years in service to his country. One mission worthy of mentioning, was the honor of being part of the Antarctica Expedition "Operation Penguin" under Admiral Richard Byrd. Any attempt to reproduce the list of his decorations and commendations would be exhaustive. He was indeed a well- respected and decorated Chief. Following a twenty-six-year career with the United States Navy, James followed with a second career with ITT Thompson of twenty years as an engineer. In addition to his wife Madeline, he was preceded in death by his grandson, Donald R. "Donnie" Nunn, Jr.
Survivors include his two sons, Donald R. Nunn, Sr. and his wife Benita of Valdosta, GA. and James E. Nunn, Jr. and his wife Bonnie of Cedar Creek, TX: three grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
