Jennie Lou Lashley Hughes, born October 18, 1941, in Jasper, FL, to Hubert and Vallie Lashley, passed away on January 22, 2025. Jasper has lost a beloved member of its community, but her sweet spirit and welcoming smile will never be forgotten.
Jennie was the cherished wife of her best friend and soulmate, Elbert Hughes, and is now joyfully reunited with him. Known for her warmth and kindness, Jennie had a unique gift for making everyone she met feel loved and welcome.
A dedicated worker and community supporter, Jennie served Jasper for over five decades. She spent 24 years working for Mallory Tuten at his grocery store before starting a new career as a pharmacy technician. She devoted 28 additional years to Jackson's Drug Store and CVS in Jasper, as well as working the election polls for 18 years, always providing her community with genuine care and compassion. Jennie took great pride in her yard, which she lovingly maintained to perfection. Her passion for gardening and landscaping was evident in the beautiful surroundings she created, a reflection of her dedication and care. In retirement, she also enjoyed spending time with her friends, cherishing their weekly Friday breakfasts and frequent dinners. Jennie was truly a people person, and her vibrant presence touched countless lives.
Jennie is survived by her three sons, Chris Hughes (Kelinda), Scott Hughes (Denice), and Jodi Hughes (Donna), all of Jasper; her brother, Emory Lashley (Nora), also of Jasper; and her treasured grandchildren, Dana Burke (Scott), Cricket Hughes, William Hughes (Kassie), Maggie Hughes, Amanda Petty (Lane), and Matthew Hughes (Kali). Her legacy lives on through her great-grandchildren: Cassi, Alexandria, Jax, Harper, Declan, Carter, Jackson, and Kyndall. Jennie also leaves behind a lifelong friend, Martha Ard.
A funeral service to honor Jennie's life will be held on Tuesday, January 28, 2025, at 2:00 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Jasper, FL. The family will welcome friends for a time of visitation beginning at 1:00 p.m. at the church. Interment will follow the service at Evergreen Cemetery in Jasper, where Jennie will be laid to rest beside her beloved husband, Elbert.
Jennie Lou Lashley Hughes will forever be remembered as a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend who brought joy and light to all who knew her.
