IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Jewell Nedra
"Tootsie" Tyre
September 5, 1933 – September 14, 2022
Jewell Nedra Holton Tyre, age 89, of Jasper, FL. passed away on September 14, 2022 at the Suwannee Campus of the Lake City Medical Center in Live Oak, FL.
Nedra, also known as "Aunt Toot or Tootsie" was born at home on September 5, 1933 in Jasper, FL. to the late Robert "Rob" and Luna Culbreath Holton. She grew up on the farm with her sister Christine and her brother Pete and the three were often joined by her many cousins. Nedra began working at Jennings High School not long after graduating. She married the late Paul Vasco Tyre and became a stay-at-home wife and mother until Paul's death in May of 1981. Following Paul's death, Nedra went back to work at the Hamilton County Council on Aging for a few years before being hired by the City of Jasper at City Hall where she would remain until her retirement. Both of her siblings passed away at a young age and she had branded herself with the same fate and had decided based on her calculations that she too would pass away at an early age. After she lived beyond her calculated 58 th birthday and even her 59 th birthday, her family jokingly reminded her that she was living on borrowed time. Every year after 1991 was considered her bonus years. To be exact, she was blessed with an additional 31 bonus years. Those years were not without challenges as she fought and won a battle with cancer, a heart attack and a stroke. She was a woman of faith and she believed in the power of prayer because she had been the recipient of those prayers and she knew her God had spared her. After moving to the nursing home, she learned how to use her iPad and phone with confidence and became a huge fan of Facebook because she was able to visit by way of the internet with her many friends and family. Holidays were shared with her sister Christine and family. Those who shared the many holidays with them recall memories of the table being filled great food. In fact, Thanksgiving and Christmas pictures of the past were not those of the sisters and cousins, but rather were pictures of the table filled with food and desserts that Christine and Nedra had worked tirelessly to prepare. Nedra was a longtime member of New Hope Baptist Church until her daughter Lora became pianist at the First Baptist Church in Jasper. It was then and only then that she decided to attend with her daughter at First Baptist each week.
Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Paul Anthony Tyre and his wife Ronda of Alliance, Nebraska; her daughter and son-in-law, Lora Tyre Padgett and her husband Jimmy of Jasper, FL.; her grandson, Dylan Tyre and a "grandchild of the heart", Leslie Ann Goolsby Carroll. Also surviving are her two step daughters, Linda Jane Altman of Tifton, GA. and Paula Ray of Lake Park, GA. as well as many Holton and Tyre nieces, nephews and cousins.
Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 22, 2022 at the First Baptist Church in Jasper, FL.
The family will receive friends at the church beginning at 10:00 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to First Baptist Church, 207 NE 2 nd St. Jasper, FL. 32052.
