IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Marta Nebhuth
Mcculley
November 10, 1927 – May 17, 2022
Marta Nebhuth McCulley, passed away on May 17, 2022 at Lake City Medical Center in Lake City, FL. at the age of 94.
Marta was a native of Wiesbaden, Germany, born on November 10, 1927. She was one of nine children born to the late Wilhelm and Wilhelmina Muhn Nebhuth. Naturally times were hard growing up in Germany in the 1930-40's, but families were close and leaned on each other. As a young girl in Germany, Marta learned the art of sewing, crocheting, needlepoint, and tatting. She continued her passion for creating beautiful, handmade items throughout most of her life. She always made personal gifts for each of the family members for different gift occasions.
At the age of nineteen a young serviceman by the name of Lowery Lawton McCulley courted her and on April 15, 1947, he married her and brought her home to the states, and they made their home in Jennings at the farm. After making Florida her home, she grew to love cooking "soul food" but also shared some of her native German recipes with her family and friends. Another of her favorite past-times was working in her yard. She kept it immaculate pine cone by pine cone, leaf by leaf, sometimes leaving her husband, Lawton, and the children shaking their heads. She enjoyed solving crossword puzzles in an effort to keep her mind sharp and she loved getting together with friends to play board games. With a number of ladies from Germany in the area, Marta enjoyed going out to eat and visiting with those whom she felt a connection.
Above all else however, family was her priority. She was "Mama" and "Oma" first and foremost. Living to be 94, she was highly respected and admired in the family and enjoyed hosting family Christmases and Thanksgivings every year, where everyone couldn't wait to eat her pecan pies and famous oyster dressing. She was such a well-loved lady and a true matriarch of the family, leaving her children and grandchildren with quite a legacy. Marta and Lawton were longtime members of Jennings United Methodist Church, and she remained active as long as her health permitted. She was a devout Christian and enjoyed sharing her love of Christ with others. Marta was preceded in death by her husband Lawton and her son Larry McCulley and was the last of the nine children born to the Nebhuth household.
Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Michael "Mike" Jones of Jasper, FL., her son, Terry McCulley of Jennings, FL.; seven grandchildren, twelve great grandchildren, four great great-grandchildren and one on the way. She also still has relatives in Germany.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, May 21, 2022 in the chapel of Harry T. Reid Funeral Home in Jasper, FL.
Interment followed at Evergreen Cemetery in Jasper.
Memorial contributions may be made in her memory to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 17127, Tampa, FL. 33682 or www.cancer.org.
