Obituary

Martha Shirley Caldwell Abercrombie, age 92, passed away at South Georgia Medical Center in Valdosta, GA on Saturday, March 12, 2016 following a brief illness. She was best known as "Shirley" to her friends and extended family. Shirley was born in Thomasville, GA on November 16, 1923 to the late Eugene F. and Martha Kerr Caldwell. During World War II, while her husband was in the Navy she worked at the Manhattan Project site in Oak Ridge, Tennessee as part of the building of the atomic bomb. Shirley was also a bookkeeper and pharmacy tech during different phases of her working career. Admittedly, it was her time working in the nursery at Northside Baptist Church in Valdosta where she was a long time member that she loved the most. Mrs. Abercrombie was preceded in death by her husband, Stanton "Stan" Abercrombie and two daughters, Elaine Oppelt and Midge Martin.

Survivors include two sons, Darryl "Butch" Abercrombie and his wife Carol of Orlando, FL. and Robert "Buddy" Abercrombie and his wife Guille of Warner Robins, GA.; one daughter, Sheryl Brewer of Chuluota, FL.; one brother , Jack Caldwell, Glen Dora, CA; a son-in-law, Joe Oppelt, The Villages, FL., 13 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren and 9 great great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.

Graveside services were held at Evergreen Cemetery in Jasper, FL. on Tuesday, March 15, 2016.
