Mary Verline Moody

Mary Verline Erskin Moody was born on October 5, 1940, in St. Matthews, South Carolina, to the late Charlie and Mary Erskin. Verline passed peacefully at her home on the morning of Friday, April 10, 2026, following an extended illness, surrounded by her loving family.

After the untimely passing of her mother, Verline stepped up at a young age to help care for her household and her younger siblings, Thomas and Ann. As a teenager, she moved to Jasper, where she met the love of her life, Gordon Moody. They were married on May 4, 1963, and shared 40 wonderful years together, raising three children who were their pride and joy.

Verline worked for many years as a talented cake decorator at IGA and Foodway. After retiring, she devoted herself fully to caring for her beloved grandchildren, proudly embracing her favorite role as “Grandma.”

Verline was adored by all who knew her. Those closest to her knew she was feisty, full of life, and always ready for adventure. She had a deep love for traveling, especially trips to the beach. From childhood through her final days, she dedicated her life to caring for others. She cherished her many nieces and nephews and made sure each of them felt loved. Verline will always be remembered for her kind and compassionate heart and her unique ability to make everyone feel like family.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Charlie and Mary Erskin; her husband, Gordon Moody; and her siblings, H.L. Erskin and Ann Rankin.

Verline is survived by her brother, Thomas Erskin of Live Oak, Florida; her children, Twyla Wheeler (Eddie), Willie Moody (Tracy), and Sabrina Moody, all of Jasper, Florida; and her cherished grandchildren, Brett Wheeler (Morgan), Gabrielle Foster (Russell), Brittany Gooden (Akiem), Jared Moody (Selena), Will Curry (Stacy), Courtney Moody (Brooke), and Zachary Browning (Kristy). She also leaves behind 18 great-grandchildren, along with many special nieces, nephews, and dear friends.

Family and friends are invited to gather in remembrance of Verline on Monday, April 13, 2026. Visitation will begin at 1:00 PM, followed by a celebration of her life at 2:00 PM at Harry T. Reid Funeral Home. She will be laid to rest afterward at Moody Cemetery.
