Obituary

Orton Bryan, CWO4 United States Air Force Retired, passed away on Sunday, May 25, 2008 at his home. He was born April 10, 1923 in Jasper, FL. Preceded in death by his parents, W.L. Bryan and Fannie Stalvey Bryan, he is survived by his wife of 62 years, Rowena Clayton Bryan; two daughters, Lisa Rowena Bryan Canipelli (Edward Jr.) and Lauranell Bryan Thomas (Barry Keith); two grandchildren, Cassandra Rowena Moore and Barry Keith Thomas, Jr.; one sister, Blanche McCrum.
Mr. Bryan was a combat veteran of World War II having flown 35 missions with the 8th Air Force as a radio operator/gunner on B-52's and B-24's. He flew for two years during the Korean War on C-97 transport planes worldwide. He held the Distinguised Flying Cross, five Air Medals, four Battle Stars in the European Theater of Operation and numerous other medals, awards and honors. His career included major commands from Hawaii to Washington, D.C. where he served at the Pentagon. After 25 1/2 years of active service he retired on June 1, 1973.
The youngest of seven children, Orton was raised in Jasper and attended Jasper High School. Throughout his Air Force career he attended colleges and universities throughout the United States graduating from Troy State University with Bachelors and Masters degrees. He taught for 11 years in Orange County, FL., retired in 1985, and returned to Jasper where he lived the rest of his life. Mr. Bryan was a member at First Baptist Church in Jasper where he taught Sunday School and was an active member of the Brotherhood as long as his health permitted.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, May 28th at First Baptist Church with Pastor Roger Hutto officiating. Mr. Joe Taylor close friend of the family gave the eulogy. Interment followed at Live Oak Cemetery in Live Oak, FL. with full military honors.
