Obituary

Samuel Matthew Bennett "Sam", age 44, of Jasper, FL. passed from this life to the next on Wednesday, January 3, 2018. Sam's battle was well documented but after 48 days was yet to be diagnosed by some of the best physicians and staff at Shands U.F. in Gainesville, Florida. The courage of his family and Sam's own reputation for being an all-around good guy, brought hundreds of people together in prayer that a miracle cure would be found but it was not to be.

Sam was known by many as, Sam and Dan, as if the two names were one. That was because on June 30, 1973 in Valdosta, GA., Muril and Sheila Cooper Bennett delivered not just one, but two beautiful baby boys. The two were inseparable in childhood and young adulthood in a small community where even those that knew them well might get confused. They were joined some years later by younger brother Eric who just insinuated himself into the mix of mischief one might guess twins would involve themselves in.

Sam had a big heart and an even bigger personality and so it was no surprise that he had many friends. His smile was infectious and he had the ability to make you laugh with just a look. He joined the United States Army in the early 90's and served his country for four years with an additional three years in the reserves. Because of his military training, he made an easy transition to the Department of Corrections where he worked as a correctional officer until he was sidelined with illness.

Sam's love for family was obvious. He met and married Maggie Lopez and the two welcomed Matthew Cooper Bennett. Matthew became his world. The two spent many hours together on and around the water fishing and swimming. Blessed beyond measure, for a few short years, the two enjoyed doing things dads and sons should do together, hunting, fishing, boating and pulling for the Georgia Bulldogs.

Survivors include his wife of nine years, Maggie Lopez Bennett; his son, Matthew Cooper Bennett; parents, Muril and Sheila Bennett; his twin brother, Dan Bennett (Amanda), all of Jasper, FL. and younger brother, Eric Bennett (Caitlin) of Bradenton, FL.; nieces and nephews. Also surviving is his mother-in-law, Yolanda Lopez of Jasper, FL. and many aunts, uncles and cousins.

Memorial services were held  on Saturday, January 6, 2018 at First Baptist Church in Jasper, FL.

Memorial contributions may be made to a worthy organization associated with veterans that is very close to Maggie's heart: Jenkins Veterans Home, 751 SE Sycamore Terrace, Lake City, FL. 32025
