IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Steven Lawrence
Gornto
February 11, 1952 – April 1, 2023
Steven L. Gornto, 71, beloved husband, father, and brother, died at his home in Watkinsville, GA surrounded by his family on Saturday, April 1, 2023, after a long illness. He is survived by his wife, Carol, son Nathan, sister Pamela and brother-in-law Carl H (Buddy) Brand. He leaves behind numerous nieces and nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins. He is predeceased by his parents, Cecil L and Florence (Selph) Gornto.
Steve was born in Jacksonville, FL. In his youth, his family moved often due to his father's work, living in Florida, Georgia, Oklahoma, and Maryland before returning to Columbus, GA. He made friends and embraced new opportunities wherever he lived. In OK, he excelled in track and enjoyed wilderness camping. In Maryland, New Jersey and New York, he played guitars and congas in coffee shops. Steve graduated from Columbus High School and attended Columbus College prior to moving to Athens, GA. He met his future wife, Carol A Walter, while both were working for the City of Athens and they were married October 23, 1976, in Oglethorpe County, GA.
Steve was known for being a loyal and generous friend, ready and willing to help those in need. A quick learner, Steve utilized his many skills while working in construction, carpentry, and park management. In retirement, he started his own company, Avocet Residential Services, named after his favorite shore bird.
As a young adult, he discovered his talent and appreciation for woodworking. Although he never had formal training, he excelled in his trade, bringing his drawings to life. He studied historical preservation and took great pride in his work restoring and repairing antebellum homes in Madison, GA. – a feat that most master carpenters aspire to achieve.
Like his father, Steve had a diverse range of interests and sought to learn as much as possible about each. He had a deep appreciation for art, music and books. An avid reader, he surrounded himself with books on topics ranging from history, biographies, science, religion, classics, Native American non-fiction, Beat poetry, and all things Hunter Thompson. He absorbed lessons on art, architecture, & religion. He could tell you all about neutrinos, black holes and string theory as well as Taoism and contemplative prayer. His vocabulary was something to behold. He was a writer, hoping to publish in the future.
Steve was a quietly spiritual man with a profound sense of introspection. He volunteered at his church, led the Parish Council, enjoyed teaching Sunday School and contributed to the maintenance of the church. He loved and was proud of his extended family.
A Funeral Mass was held April 17, 2023, at St. James Catholic Church in Madison, GA. He was buried April 22, 2023, at Live Oak City Cemetery in Live Oak, FL following a graveside service officiated by his cousin's son, Rev. Patrick Murphy. He made a lasting impression on everyone who loved him and will forever remain in our hearts. His family extends their gratitude to all for their support and kindness.
