Obituary

Walter Nathaniel Gist, Jr., age 60, of Jennings, FL, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on May 16th, 2025 after a lengthy illness. Born on August 17, 1964, in Chandler, Arizona, Walter was the son of Walter Nathaniel Gist, Sr. and Hilda Florence Herndon.

A skilled automotive technician, Walter dedicated many years of service to Ray Norton Tire and Auto in Valdosta, GA. Known for his expertise under the hood, Walter was just as at home with a guitar in his hands. Music was his lifelong passion. Over the years, he played in several local bands across North Florida and South Georgia, sharing the stage with friends and fellow musicians. His styles ranged from classic rock and country to the soulful rhythms of the blues. Among the bands he proudly played in were Three Rivers Band—which he shared with his beloved wife, Darleen—Wrong Turn, State Road 6, and Just In Time.

Walter also found great joy in the outdoors. He loved hunting for deer and dove, and he treasured the peace and adventure that came with those moments in nature. Still, no matter where life took him—on the road, on the stage, or into the woods—Walter's heart was always anchored at home.

Family was the center of Walter's world. He was a loving and devoted husband, father, son, brother, and grandfather. He adored his children and poured his heart into being a part of their lives. He was also deeply cherished by his nieces and nephews, who looked up to him not only as a relative but as a role model and a friend. His warm smile, big hugs, and easy laughter created a bond with each of them that will be remembered forever.

Walter is survived by his loving wife of 40 years, Darleen Gist; his daughter, Leighann Kelly Aretino (Christopher "Ross") of Live Oak, FL; his son, Walter N. Gist III; his mother, Hilda Gist Parker, and stepfather, Allen Parker; his brothers, Bobby Gist (De Anna) of Clyattville, GA, and Jeffrey Gist (Angie) of Jennings, FL. He also leaves behind five grandchildren—Kaleigh, Braylin, Paysen, Paisley and Carson—as well as a host of nieces, nephews, and extended family who will forever remember him with love.

He was preceded in death by his father, Walter Nathaniel Gist, Sr., and his sisters, Darlene Hall and Cheryl Ann Gist.

Walter's life will be honored at a funeral service on Tuesday, May 20, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at Harry T. Reid Funeral Home in Jasper, FL. A time of visitation will be held prior to the service beginning at 10:00 a.m. Interment will follow at Corinth Cemetery in Lake City, FL.
