Wayne Emory Smith, age 91, passed away peacefully on April 5, 2026, at South Georgia Medical Center in Valdosta, Georgia.
Born on July 2, 1934, to Charles and Lola Smith, Wayne lived a life defined by hard work, deep faith, and an unwavering love for his family.
He was married to the love of his life, Shirley Smith, for 67 devoted years. Together, they built a life rooted in faith, family, and a bond that stood the test of time.
Wayne worked for over 20 years with Norfolk Southern Railway, where he proudly earned the nickname "Lightning." He had a true passion for the railroad and carried that same strong work ethic into his later years. Even in retirement, Wayne kept himself busy doing what he enjoyed, working with scrap metal and taking pride in it, while also helping his beloved wife with events through the Hamilton County Chamber of Commerce.
He was a simple man in the best sense of the word-strong, dependable, and always willing to lend a hand. Wayne loved his family deeply and found his greatest joy in being surrounded by them. He enjoyed watching his favorite western, Gunsmoke, and never missed a chance to help someone in need. Above all, he loved the Lord with all his heart and was a longtime member of Sunrise Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Shirley Smith, his daughter, Angela Howell, and his parents, Charles and Lola Smith.
Wayne leaves behind a legacy of love and strength in his surviving family: his daughter, Sharon Davis; his grandchildren, Rebecca Wynne (Brent Wynne), Emilee Boyette (Steven Boyette), and Eli Howell (Jennifer Howell); and his great-grandchildren, Hunter, Levi, Harper, Knox, and Lawson.
He will be deeply missed and forever remembered by all who knew and loved him.
Graveside services will be held on April 9, 2026, at Evergreen Cemetery in Jasper, Florida. Visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m., with the funeral service to follow at 11:00 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial donations be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Wayne’s honor
