IN LOVING MEMORY OF
William Allen
Carter
November 21, 1932 – July 8, 2023
William "Billy" Allen Carter was born in Echols County, GA on November 21st, 1932. He went to be with our Savior on July 8th, 2023 at the age of 90. Mr. Carter was born to Laura Blanche Kinsey and George Lawton Carter and was the eldest of three children. Mr. Carter attended Lake Park High School, graduating in 1949. He continued his education at Georgia Florida Business school and gained the opportunity to work for Paine Hardware Company in Valdosta, GA. The job awarded him valuable experience for which he was very grateful.
Mr. Carter was honored to join the United States Navy in 1951, serving his country for four years. His spirit of patriotism and respect for veterans continued throughout his lifetime. Following his military service, he completed an accounting degree at Valdosta State University and accepted employment with the federal government. He worked in Savannah, GA and Brunswick, GA before returning to Valdosta where he would become reacquainted and latter smitten with Maxine Register.
Billy Allen married his forever love, Maxine, on a hot, August afternoon in 1965. The couple settled on the family farm in Echols County where they raised two children, attended church, and developed priceless friendships within the community.
After retiring from the Department of the Treasury, Billy Allen enjoyed working on the farm. He raised animals, grew a garden, and helped take care of his grandchildren. His love for reading, genealogy, classical music, and studying Christian theology gave him plenty to discuss with his family and challenged them to be "life-long" learners. Seldom did they find a topic he could not discuss with them.
He was blessed with a beautiful wife, two children, a daughter in law, and 6 grandchildren that respected and valued his leadership. He shared his knowledge and competitive spirit through stories, checker games, and boxes of books for Christmas. The unwavering support and integrity he demonstrated will be missed daily by his family and all those who knew him.
Mr. Carter is survived by his wife of 57 years, Maxine Carter; son Hannan (Kathy) Carter; daughter Susan Carter; his grandchildren Hannah (Ryan) Rawlings; Rebecca Raines, Zackery Carter, Zane Carter, Kasey Carter, and Greta Carter; Brother Terry (Louise) Carter; sister Mary Ann Weeks (the late Glynn Weeks); nephews Sidney (Holly) and Kevin (Mandy) Carter. Mr. Carter also gained an additional family when he married Maxine and had tremendous love and respect for each of them.
A service will be held on Wednesday, July 12th, 2023. The visitation will start at 10:00 AM, with the funeral service following at 11:00 AM. Both services will be held at Sardis Baptist Church. In lieu of flowers, Mr. Carter asked that donations be made to the Lake City Veterans Hospital.
