On the morning of May 8th, after bravely battling illness with his loving family at his side - William Bruce Howell went to be with the Lord.
Bruce was born on August 12, 1927 to James Franklin Howell and Mamie Grace Hiers Howell in Jennings, Florida, where he grew up on his family farm and attended school. After serving several years as a corpsman in the United States Navy, Bruce met his beloved wife, Maxine Howell, and they were married on April 4, 1950 in Mcintosh, FL. While loving and caring for his family, Bruce attended the University of Florida and earned his undergraduate and Master's degree in Agriculture Education. He remained a proud member of the Gator Nation with a special admiration for the "Steve Spurrier" years. Bruce's career in Education, allowed him to teach Agriculture in Kathleen and Lakeland Senior High School for many years. He greatly enjoyed the young students that he taught, taking time to sponsor the Future Farmers of America organization and their trips to national conference. He eventually left the class room to serve as the principal at Crystal Lake Junior High. Bruce ended his educational career serving as the Executive Director, State Advisory Council on Vocational Education in Tallahassee.
Bruce retired from the state of Florida in 1979 to enjoy a second career as a tree farmer on his family farm in Jennings. He also became a grandfather in 1979, welcoming into his life the first 2 of his 9 grandchildren.
Bruce and Maxine taught their sons the love of outdoors, hunting, fishing, camping and traveling as a family.
Bruce is survived by his 3 Sons and their wives - William B. Jr. ( Sherry), Danny (Terri), and Joseph (Lorre); his grandchildren Joseph Jr. ( Marsha), Dan (Monica), Jeffrey (Kimberly), Wm. Bruce, III, James (Whitney) Elizabeth, Sean, and Brady; by his great-grandsons Benjamin and Hogan and great-granddaughters Carys Grace and Addie; beloved sisters Suzi Means (Jim) and Sandra Stacy (Stroud); many nieces and nephews as well as family and dear friends from Jennings.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his loving wife of 59 years Maxine Boulware Howell; his brother Jack Howell, and his granddaughter Renee Howell.
Bruce was laid to rest May 13th following a graveside service at Sassers Landing Cemetery in Jennings, Florida.
