IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Wonnie Thomas
Mathis
October 31, 1933 – May 31, 2022
Wonnie T. Mathis, age 88, of Jennings, FL. passed away on Tuesday, May 31, 2022 at Lake City Medical Center in Lake City, FL. following an extended illness.
Wonnie was born on October 11, 1933 in Alma, Georgia (Bacon County) to the late Tom W. Thomas and Nora B. Walker. She was married to the late Alex E. Mathis. Ms. Wonnie had children by a previous marriage, Charlie L. McCauley, Jr., William Sidney McCauley, Deborah Jean McCauley, James Michael McCauley and Roxey Loretta McCauley Echard. At last count she had 10 grandchildren and 23 great grandchildren. She also had brothers and sisters, Ruth Thomas, Vassie L. Waters, Oletha Shelton, Odesa Manson, Peggy Phillips and a half brother, Jake Story. Wonnie was an active member at Burnham Church near Jennings as long as her health permitted but always maintained contact with her church family.
Memories of Wonnie Mathis will always include her dedication to the card ministry at Burnham. Her penmanship was recognized immediately and it was always so very beautiful. In appreciation some years back, the Burnham Church family honored her on her birthday with a basket full of cards from members of the church expressing just how much receiving a card from her always meant. Wonnie had many friends but because of her poor vision was unable to be out and about and so she reached out often to check on others. Her daily and weekly calls were appreciated by so many others that were in the same position she was that missed that in-person fellowship.
In making pre-arrangements for her funeral, Ms. Wonnie began to list all of those she wanted to sit with the family (as family) which included most of the church but most especially all of the children and youth that grew up in the church since her arrival in 1978. She loved each and every one of them with all of her heart. As she recalled all of the good in her life, she never failed to say how much she loved being a part of Burnham Church and how she could never repay all of the people that had helped her over the years. She would often say, "I know I can be difficult..." but she was always complementary of the goodness of others and how good God had been to her.
Funeral services were held on Friday, June 3, 2022 at Burnham Church near Jennings, FL. Interment followed in the church cemetery.
